How to play Craps - Part 2

Getting around the Craps table

Getting around the Craps table

The Craps table has three dealers—one for each side and a stickman in the middle to control the dice and prop bets. It helps to know where things are on the layout. Again, when you play Craps, you might ignore 90% of the layout. That's what makes Craps a very fun game. There are so many ways to play.

Big 6 and Big 8

On the corner of the layout (marked as A below) is the Big 6 and Big 8. These are there to take money from lazy bettors. These two wagers are paid even money. For instance, wager $5 and you'll be paid $5 per win. However, had you placed the 6 and 8, you would be paid odds on your wins. For instance, place a $6 6 or 8 and you'll be paid $7 each time it's rolled.

By being lazy and making a Big 6 or Big 8 bet, you lose money each time the number is rolled. By the way, placing a number simply means that you tell the dealer that you want to bet on the number. The dealer will "place" your wager on that number and it will stay there until you call the bet off or it loses—when a 7 is rolled while the bet is active.

The Field

The Field (marked as B below) has a lot of numbers in it—2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12. That's just over half of the numbers. Winning wagers are paid even money, except the 2 and 12, which are paid double or triple—depends on the casino.

When you bet on the field, it's live or die, because it's a one-roll bet only. So, if the next roll is a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12, you win.

Hardways

The Hardways (marked as C below) are in the center of the layout—also known as the prop box. There are four Hardways—Hard 4, Hard 6, Hard 8 and Hard 10.

As you'll see below, there's only one combination to hit these wagers. For instance, to hit a Hard 4, the dice must land on two 2's. The payouts are shown on the layout below as well.

This wager is up until it wins, loses or you take it down. They always work on the come out roll unless you tell the dealer you're "off."

Other Props

There are other prop wagers in the center. We're not going to cover them, other than to say that they exist.

Two common ones are Any Craps and Eleven (also known as "Yo"). These are one-roll wagers only.

The layout below shows the Eleven (D) and Any Craps (E) wagers. Most players play these wagers on the come out roll.
